Bullying Among Older Adults: Not Just a Playground Problem – June 11, 2024

In this webinar, participants will gain insight into bullying within adult living communities and day centers. We will delve into the definition and incidence of bullying among older adults, exploring its unique characteristics and manifestations within this population. Additionally, we will examine the profiles of older adult bullies, their targets, and any gender differences that may exist. Understanding why bullying occurs is crucial, which is why we will define the five different types of bullies and shed light on the reasons behind their behavior.

1pm – 2pm CST

The impact of bullying on the health and well-being of seniors cannot be overstated. Even a single instance can have long-lasting effects. That’s why it’s essential not only to define bullying but also to recognize the warning signs, understand its physical and emotional toll, and know what actions to take if it occurs. To this end, we will review interventions for organizations, bullies, and targets, aiming to help communities minimize and, where possible, prevent bullying while mitigating its effects on victims. Addressing bullying among older adults is crucial for enhancing their quality of life and emotional well-being.

We will also discuss strategies for creating empathetic and supportive communities for all residents and staff members, fostering environments that promote care and understanding.
