Missouri State Board of Nursing supports education with grants

Recently, the Missouri State Board of Nursing announced $3.1 million in grant funding for 21 Missouri colleges and universities through the Nursing Education Incentive Program (NEIP), advancing the state’s efforts to recruit, train and retain a high-quality nursing workforce.  Since 2011, the Board has awarded over $27 million in NEIP grants to expand nursing program capacity and pilot new education programs. This year’s awards include $1 million in funding approved appropriated by the  General Assembly, and an additional $2.1 million allocated from the Board.

The NEIP is an annual grant program designed to increase the physical and educational capacity of professional nursing programs throughout the state. The Missouri State Board of Nursing coordinates with the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development to determine annual recipients.

Missouri urges flu prevention amid seasonal uptick

Always a concern for senior care communities caring for a vulnerable population, DHSS is reporting a significant increase in influenza activity across Missouri as the 2025–2026 flu season progresses. According to the Missouri Influenza Surveillance Dashboard, 9,255 laboratory-confirmed influenza cases and 558 flu-related hospitalizations statewide have been reported to DHSS.  In addition, emergency department visits for influenza-like illness and positive lab tests climbed above baseline levels in December, prompting health officials to remind residents of the importance of preventive measures.

The best defense against influenza is annual vaccination. DHSS recommends that everyone aged six months and older receive a flu shot as soon as possible. Vaccination reduces the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and complications, especially for high-risk groups such as seniors. Weekly updates on flu activity, including county-level data and trends, are available on the Missouri Influenza Dashboard. For more information on flu prevention and where to get vaccinated, visit health.mo.gov.
