  • Location: Marbella
  • Introduced by Forvis Mazars, Sponsor
  • Presenter: Andy Edeburn, Managing Partner, Elder Dynamics
  • CEUs: 1 Adm

Strategic planning can be a challenging process for any aging services organization – demographic changes, economic uncertainty, workforce challenges, increasing competition, and planned and unplanned leadership transitions are all on the table for a leadership team and board to consider. And, once identified, how are challenges and opportunities explored and prioritized, and who is key to this work? Our value proposition is under considerable flux for aging services organizations and is starting to change. This session will explore these topics and the crucial considerations an organization must explore to develop a robust and actionable strategic plan.

3:45 pm – 4:00 pm – Break

4:00 pm – 5:00 pm – WORKSHOP – Getting Into Gear: Starting Your Strategic Planning Process

  • Location: Marbella
  • Presenter: Andy Edeburn, Managing Partner, Elder Dynamics
  • CEUs: 1 Adm

When doing something new or different, just getting started is often the biggest hurdle. This is especially true when planning, especially if you haven’t done one before or in a very long time. This 60-minute workshop session will focus on a series of rapid-fire exercises to help launch common steps in the process for smaller organizations and build a foundation for a successful outcome – what are the key questions we need to ask or resolve, who needs to be involved in the process, when and where does a retreat make sense, who will drive the bus to get us there, and how to keep everything moving.

  • Sponsored by PARIC

Thursday, May 29

7:00 am – 8:00 am – Breakfast

8:00 am – 9:00 am – Cultural Transformation: Creating the Pathway from Institution to Home

  • Location: Marbella
  • Presenter: Joan Devine, RN, BSN, LNHA, CDP, Former Director of Education, Pioneer Network, MC5
  • CEUs: 1 PC

If you could not meet your own needs, would you look for a place designed to “look after you,” or would you want to find a place where you could “feel you belong”? Or are you looking for both? Historically, institutions have been the only option for many seniors and others requiring support and services in a residential setting. How did we get to this place, and more importantly, how can we get out of it? Is it possible to transform the culture of aging care and services?

8:00 am – 9:00 am – TPOPP/POLST – A Better Way to Express Advance Care Plans and Code Status

  • Location: Seachase
  • Presenter: Charles Crecelius, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine, Washington University School of Medicine & Geriatrics, St. Louis
  • CEUs: 1 PC

TPOPP/POLST is a national paradigm to ensure person’s wishes towards end of life are carried out – it stands for Transportable Physician Orders for Patient Preferences / Physician Orders for Life Sustaining Treatments. It is a means to ensure code status orders are carried out in all sites of service (home, nursing home, assisted living, dialysis etc.) using one form for all sites of service. It is a medical order to be carried out at all times and all places. It complements and reflects advance directives – which are not medical orders, and is superior to the current Out of Hospital DNR (OHDNR) form used in Missouri.

8:00 am – 9:00 am – You May Not Be as Good as You Think You Are (According to Your Frontline Teams)

  • Location: HK’s Clubroom
  • Presenter: Laura Cambria, Senior Vice President of Operations, KARE
  • CEUs: 1 Adm

This session unpacks several in-depth studies facilitated recently by KARE, surveying over 3,000 licensed caregivers and nurses as well as hundreds of senior care communities. When we compare the answers from caregivers with those from communities, in many cases, we get it very wrong.
