Bill’s Perspective: Coming together to build relationships and learn

Hello LeadingAge Missouri members!  Conferences are top of mind and informing my Perspective!

We always encourage member attendance at both our state and national annual conferences.  This year is no exception.  And, having flipped LA MO’s gathering from fall to spring, we no longer compete for your fall calendar.  We hope you enjoyed our inaugural May Conference this year, and we look forward to seeing you May 18-20 at Margaritaville at the Lake next year.  But, right now, please consider joining colleagues at the LeadingAge Annual Meeting in Boston November 2-5.  This year’s convening has an international flair, as it’s being held in conjunction with the Global Aging Network, which LeadingAge has long supported.  If you make it to Boston, be sure to pencil in Sunday evening November 2 for our Midwest State Night Out at the Cheers Bar – where everybody knows your name!

We encourage conference attendance because conferences offer members ways to refresh, recharge, build relationships, and learn.  Recently, I had such an opportunity when the Center For Innovation (umbrella organization for the Pioneer Network and Green House Project) held its conference in St. Louis.  It had been 20 years since the St. Louis accord and launch of the culture change movement!  Returning to its roots, the CFI Mobilize the Movement conference stirred memories and passion with inspiration and education – all in support of modern-day culture change through person-centered care.  I learned a lot!!!, which has contributed to my actions and perspective.

LA MO has always embraced person-centered care for LTC culture change.  In 2005, LA MO and some of its influential provider members helped form and found MC5 – the Missouri Coalition Celebrating Care Continuum Change.  During its formative years, LA MO and its members offered extensive administrative, financial, and leadership support for MC5 to lead the Missouri culture change movement.  And with the foundation successfully laid, LA MO has lent support and guidance as an MC5 Advisory Board member since 2012.

MC5 sponsors regular regional meetings and periodic educational “road shows” that advance the philosophy of person-centered care over provider-determined care.   As Missouri’s leading advocate for culture change – recognizing that a culture is an always evolving process – MC5 exists to create senior living environments where each individual’s dignity and value is respected and celebrated.  MC5 supports a model of care where residents are offered choices and staff is empowered, resulting in improved quality of care.  In this regard, MC5 and LA MO are symbiotic.

LA MO is partnering with MC5 this fall to bring its participants, our members, and others committed to person-centered care, a road show entitled Curiosity: Coaching Practices to Unlock Potential in Clinical and Employee Outcomes.  We hope you join us for one of the partnership presentations October 15,16, or 17 at a LA MO member near you!  The challenges facing the long-term care workforce demand more than management, they call for leadership that inspires, supports, and centers care on the people we serve. This interactive MC5/LA MO Roadshow is structured to equip leaders and managers with the coaching skillset.  Get tickets for the road show here!

Planning this fall’s road show, plus conversations at the recent Center For Innovation conference caused fresh thinking about the long, valued relationship between MC5 and LA MO.  Not unlike how LA MO members help one another, we are pondering ways LA MO and MC5 can refresh our relationship to help each other tackle senior care challenges.

The big announcement at the St. Louis CFI conference was CFI’s new name, logo, and website.  AgingIn (as in Aging Innovation) is the new umbrella organization for culture change champions Pioneer Network and the Green House Project.  See the new look and feel here.  I’m seeing AgingIn with fresh perspective.  And I’m looking at its State Partner, MC5, with fresh eyes and seeing promise for both LA MO and MC5 – and our respective association members and coalition supporters!  Check back here for how the fresh perspective may boost our valuable partnership!

Yours in service,

Signed, Bill.
