SUMMARY:Dementia Leadership Course
DESCRIPTION:For over 20 years\, LeadingAge Illinois and Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center have offered the Dementia Leadership Course\, a comprehensive educational series intended to provide Dementia Leaders with information they need to develop their skills and grow in their roles. \nDementia experts have recently re-designed this interactive program and added an ongoing networking component. The course provides a framework to teach the specialized skills and competencies needed to provide exceptional dementia services. \nUpon completion of the course\, participants will join the Dementia Leadership Network. Through a private forum\, the Network will offer resources and training material to use for staff education\, and allow participants to continue to interact\, connect\, share ideas\, and ask questions. \nTopics Include:\nLeadership and Dementia Care\nUpdate on Dementia\nAbility Centered Care\nRecognizing the Whole Person\nBeing an Expert in the Larger Community\nLiving with Dementia \nDate & Time\nAttendees will meet 4 times virtually via Zoom:\nNovember 18 & 20 and December 2 & 4\, 2026\n10:15 am – 2:15 pm each day \nWho Should Attend?\nDirectors of Alzheimer’s Special Care Units and Memory Care Programs\, Staff Educators\, Nurse Managers\, Therapists\, Social Workers\, Life Enrichments Directors\, Chaplains\, CNAs\, Home Care\, Adult Day Care\, Memory Care staff\, Dietary personnel\, and Administrators. Appropriate for skilled nursing\, assisted living\, and home and community-based services. \nCourse Requirements\nEach attendee must be logged into his/her own computer that has sound and video camera capabilities. \nFees\n$259 per person for all 4 sessions

This session will explore strategies for developing person-centered activities that reflect individual interests\, identities\, and life experiences. Participants will learn practical approaches for re-engaging older adults and addressing the unique needs of younger adults and men\, with a focus on purpose\, connection\, choice\, and CMS expectations. \nLearning Objectives \nParticipants will be able to: \n\nIdentify key factors to consider when developing person-centered activities based on individual interests\, identities\, and life experiences.\nApply strategies to increase participation among individuals who are hesitant to engage in activities\, including younger adults.\nDevelop meaningful activity ideas that promote purpose\, choice\, connection\, and quality of life.\n\nSession 2: “It’s a Guy Thing!” – Activities for Men\nEngaging older men in meaningful activities can be challenging\, but the right approach can spark connection and participation. This session explores the social\, emotional\, generational\, and personal interests that influence men’s engagement in long-term care and assisted living. Participants will discover practical\, person-centered ideas for creating programs that promote camaraderie\, purpose\, and well-being. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nIdentify factors that influence older men’s participation and engagement in recreational activities.\nDevelop person-centered activities that reflect men’s interests\, identities\, abilities\, and life experiences.\nApply creative strategies to increase participation\, social connection\, and meaningful engagement among male residents.\n\nFee\nMembers: $99 per person\nNon-Members $198 \nCEUs pending. \nFaculty\nCat Selman \nCatherine “Cat” Selman is an educator\, consultant\, author\, and nationally recognized speaker with more than 30 years of experience in healthcare\, social work\, activities\, education\, management\, and regulatory compliance. \nAs a speaker in all 50 states\, Cat brings practical experience and an engaging\, energetic approach to topics affecting today’s long-term care professionals. Her expertise includes person-centered care\, regulatory and compliance requirements\, care planning\, documentation\, dementia care\, and quality of life. \nCat is President and Co-Founder of The Cat Selman Company/The Healthcare Communicators\, Inc. and Co-Founding Director of the Quality of Life Alliance.
