Providers must balance autonomy\, safety\, dignity\, and person-centered care while navigating complex situations involving intimacy and sexual activity. \nThis session will explore CMS expectations related to protecting residents while supporting their rights and autonomy. Participants will learn effective communication strategies\, considerations for assessing sexual decision-making capacity\, and guidance for supporting residents with dementia or diminished capacity. \nLearning Objectives \n\nIdentify ethical considerations related to sexuality and sexual expression among older adults in nursing homes and assisted living settings.\nDescribe approaches for assessing an older adult’s capacity to make decisions regarding sexual activity\, including considerations for individuals living with dementia.\nDiscuss strategies to balance autonomy\, safety\, dignity\, and person-centered care when responding to sexual expression.\n\nSession 2: Ethics in Action: Navigating Dilemmas in Long-Term Care & Assisted Living\nEthical dilemmas are a daily reality in aging services\, especially when resident preferences\, family expectations\, professional standards\, and personal values collide. This session explores practical approaches to ethical decision-making that balance compassion\, resident rights\, and professional responsibilities. Through real-world scenarios\, participants will gain greater confidence in navigating difficult situations with clarity\, integrity\, and a person-centered focus. \nLearning Objectives \n\nIdentify common ethical dilemmas in long-term care and assisted living and the competing values or perspectives involved.\nApply ethical decision-making frameworks to evaluate challenging situations and develop appropriate\, person-centered responses.\nDemonstrate strategies for balancing resident preferences\, family concerns\, professional responsibilities\, and organizational policies when making difficult decisions.\n\nFee\nMembers: $99 per person \nNon-Members: $198 per person \n2 CEUs are pending. \nFaculty\nCat Selman  \nCatherine “Cat” Selman is an educator\, consultant\, author\, and nationally recognized speaker with more than 30 years of experience in healthcare\, social work\, activities\, education\, management\, and regulatory compliance. \nAs a speaker in all 50 states\, Cat brings practical experience and an engaging\, energetic approach to topics affecting today’s long-term care professionals. DESCRIPTION:For over 20 years\, LeadingAge Illinois and Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center have offered the Dementia Leadership Course\, a comprehensive educational series intended to provide Dementia Leaders with information they need to develop their skills and grow in their roles. \nDementia experts have recently re-designed this interactive program and added an ongoing networking component. The course provides a framework to teach the specialized skills and competencies needed to provide exceptional dementia services. \nUpon completion of the course\, participants will join the Dementia Leadership Network. Through a private forum\, the Network will offer resources and training material to use for staff education\, and allow participants to continue to interact\, connect\, share ideas\, and ask questions. \nTopics Include:\nLeadership and Dementia Care\nUpdate on Dementia\nAbility Centered Care\nRecognizing the Whole Person\nBeing an Expert in the Larger Community\nLiving with Dementia \nDate & Time\nAttendees will meet 4 times virtually via Zoom:\nNovember 18 & 20 and December 2 & 4\, 2026\n10:15 am – 2:15 pm each day \nWho Should Attend?\nDirectors of Alzheimer’s Special Care Units and Memory Care Programs\, Staff Educators\, Nurse Managers\, Therapists\, Social Workers\, Life Enrichments Directors\, Chaplains\, CNAs\, Home Care\, Adult Day Care\, Memory Care staff\, Dietary personnel\, and Administrators.
